Music & Internet Radio

Hate a song they keep playing the radio – despite it’s popularity you still hate it? What if you could change that song to an alternate one that was popular last month or longer ago? Having a custom radio station where you get to pick the songs would be great wouldn’t it? I luckily came across something that was pretty close to what I had thought of but was actually quite better! It allowed me to play almost any song I wanted and it was FREE!! Check out this free music/radio player at GrooveShark.com

As great as this player is, there was one downside to it which I have yet to measure the statistics. It has to do with your bandwidth – yes, it eats up your bandwidth each and every time you play a song. Even if it’s the same one over again, the song is re-streamed to your computer to be played. So how does GrooveShark manage to have all these songs for “free”? Well, from what I’ve read/heard, they have permission from music labels to have these songs and allow them to be played back to anyone. Users upload their own store bought music to the site where they can access it from anywhere…but it’s not just for them to access, it’s for everyone on the net! Because the song isn’t cached by the users’ computer, they don’t technically have a copy of the song and shouldn’t have to pay for it. However, the downside is that you are paying for your internet bandwidth. A small price to pay for being able to listen to any song you want at any time!

One thing I personally would like to see is a version of this flash music player in a phone – like iPhone or Android. Now wouldn’t that be cool! However, from my recollection there was some news from Apple about not hosting their app on the app store because it competes with their radio music stuff…what a bummer. Hopefully the guys/gals at GrooveShark can get around get access for us to virtually unlimited music selection. Oh, that would be the day!

What do you think of GrooveShark?

Grooveshark does have an iPod and Android app in addition to their Adobe Air desktop app, so you don’t need to have your browser open at all times. I think they ran into some issues with the Apple App Store in the past. Uncertain if they’ve been resolved, but you can download the Android app for free from the Marketplace. You do need to be a paid subscriber though, I think, to be able to make use of it. It’s a service I do find worth paying for, and combined with http://djtxt.me/ (another paid service, though it could be worth it), it becomes one of the most fluid party playlists you could have at your house party.

    • That’s pretty cool stuff! Looks like GrooveShark is continuing to do well. 🙂 I definitely love that! http://djtxt.me is handy if you’re having a party or a large group of people over. I’ll try it out sometime … or get someone else to try it out. I have a few friends that use GrooveShark all the time already when we have get together.

I need to get an Android phone…I’m stuck on HTC Windows 6.1. Damn Microsoft screwed me over with their “You cannot upgrade to windows 7 if you have 6” crap. lol.
